A Game of Gumdrops

Gabby slowly slid down the edge of the doorframe as her eyes burned with tears. It wasn’t the old man’s bloody corpse or the sheets soaked in his coagulating blood that flashed through her mind, but it was her dad’s fake smile, haunting her years later, even after he was long fucking gone.

Bastard.

He’d turned his back on his own wife and daughter to fuck younger, tighter pussy without a care in the world of the lasting damage he was doing to the women in his life he was supposed to be committed to.

“I’m so sorry for your loss,” people softly whispered to her and her mother with awkward pity in their voices during the aftermath of his death, as if his death was the actual loss they’d suffered and not his betrayal.

She’d never told Hudson the sound of the gunshot that delivered the killing bullet still rang in her ears, intrusively vibrating through her memories. The image of chunks of her father’s brain matter spattered on the walls, slowly beginning to slide down, leaving smears of red and pink slime oozing down the sheetrock like the mucus trails of slugs remained forever burned in the forefront of her mind.

This dead man with his throat slashed certainly left a bloody aftermath, but the scene wasn’t nearly as gruesome as her father’s.

What a shame…

“Hey,” Hudson tried to comfort her, clearly light-years away from having the slightest clue what was truly going on in her mind. “It’s gonna be okay.”

Fucking idiot.

“Oh, really? This man didn’t fall asleep and fail to wake up; he was MURDERED. How could we be so STUPID?”

Hudson shifted his eyes, but she angrily jutted out her fingers and jabbed him in his side.

“Say it, OUT LOUD. You know you want to.”

Perhaps it wasn’t the best time for Gabby to antagonize her stepbrother, but she couldn’t be responsible for his delicate feelings in a crisis like this.

“Look, maybe we’re off base. Maybe it wasn’t Jean; I mean, why would it be? Maybe this guy’s wife caught him looking at porn and getting it up for the first time in months, and after fifty years of putting up with his crap, she finally lost it.”

There was no wife.

Gabby recalled her grandmother once mentioning her closest neighbor, a widower of ten years.

Hudson was the one so quick to accuse their grandmother of being “crazy,” so why was he trying to defend her now?!

“The razors. Our tires. She doesn’t have to chase us down; she knows we can’t get far. She lives in these woods, and we have no way out…”

As if it meant something significant, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his switchblade.

“She’s not Michael Meyers, okay? She can’t walk faster than we can run. Even if she is batshit, she’s not going to overpower us or outsmart us.”

It wasn’t as if Gabby suddenly felt safe because Hudson had a switchblade; chances were there were carving knives somewhere in this guy’s kitchen.

“I’m not going to stab my
